Lee Scratch Perry Beat Tape by Lee Perry

Lee Perry has become a stalwart in Jamaican music. Whether people recognize him or not, there's no denying that much of his work and contributions to the Jamaican musical culture are quite relevant. Perry is both a producer and a musician with much of his work becoming a big influence in ushering reggae and dub in both the local and international scene. Throughout his career, he has released quite a lot of songs as well as albums. His use of a four track recorder in contrast to the advanced equipment his contemporary producers in that time became well accepted. His clever use of samples were accompanied with a characteristic "chugging beat" which eventually became a mainstay in reggae music. Lee Scratch Perry Beat Tape is a tribute compilation to the man created by Brisbane based outfit Dub Temple Records.

Eva on the Western Castle Island: The Wong Way EP

Eva on the Western Castle Island might not be the most catchy band name out there but it is charming especially when it's accompanied by great music. This simple record is more than just indie pop. It's a lush compilation that warms up the thought and squeezes some melodies out of your bones during those cold winter days. The band is made up of lead singer, Eva Wong, joined by assist Eero Vesterinen, guitarist Ilkka Saarinen as well as drummer Martin Linnankoski. Together, they create a sound that incorporates fun pop sensibilities and a bit of that rockish vibe.

AstroLust: Illusions

Illusions is a world where only beats, rhythm and dub matter. Created by Dominic H. Francisco aka AstroLust, the album throbs and teases with various triphop dub sounds. There's really not that much info about the artist available online but one thing's for sure, his capacity to capture this cool and dark atmosphere by manipulating samples, synths and instruments is praiseworthy. This is the fourth release from the artist since June 2012 and it seems listeners can expect some more until the year ends.

Tall Tall Trees: Moment

When it comes to indie folk, you probably have a long list of them on your music player. However, Mike Savino aka Tall Tall Trees delivers a different kind of indie folk, one infused with a bit of blues and a whole lot of soul. This banjo player has been mesmerizing audiences with his brand of indie music for some time. He has released two albums under his belt, a self-titled debut (2009) and this one, Moment (2012.) Armed with an epic banjo technique that goes through loopers, effects et al.; you can bet you'd never see a banjo played like this before.

The Fox & Bear: Your Way EP

When close friends get together, sparks fly and in this instance, good music also comes out. The Fox & Bear is a collaborative effort by close friends Caleb Kuhl, Brandon Owens, Jesse Koska & Jonathan Dimmel. Your Way EP is the first from the group (and hopefully not the last.) After recording the initial tracks, they took the project to Kickstarter to cull donations for the mixing and mastering of the record. They released the EP on November 2012. With only four tracks included, it's quite short but it's expertly written and provides an array of melodic indie rock that's easy to like.

The Runnies: You Can’t Win

Exploding with a raw rock sound that echoes a lofi version of Juliette Lewis and the Licks crossed with the swagger of The Doors; The Runnies have that likable dirty rock sound that makes them difficult to ignore. This Chicago trio knows how to capture an audience. Mixing 60s garage rock with a church revival feel isn't easy but they nail it sweetly thanks to frontwoman Mary McKane's strong vocal presence; some really sweet guitar riffs from partner, Russ Calderwood and drummer Brett Swinney's steady pace.

The Blackfires: Live at The Cutting Room

It’s been awhile since we featured a balls-out hard rock band here on the blog, so here’s one record you can sink your teeth into. The Blackfires – Live at The Cutting Room captures the essence of the band’s sound. From wild riffs, impressive wailing vocals and crashing cymbals, the tracks from this mini session will resonate deep and hard for many fans of 70s rock and roll.

Howl: Happy Valley

Age is no excuse not to make a great record, just ask Howl. This little electro, ambient project is helmed by 18 year old Josh Banham aka Howl. This isn't his first piece either as he's been releasing several mini compilations for awhile. Recorded between October 2011 and July 2012, Happy Valley is a collection of tracks "about dreams and songs about love and songs about dying," according to the artist. This is actually his first non-digital release. Each piece of the physical CD is handprinted, although listeners can also grab the digital record at a name-your-price option.
