Minus the Bear

Seattle has always been a breeding ground for great rock bands – see Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bikini Kill, Death Cab For Cutie. The list could go on and on. There must be something about the Seattle landscape that influences its people to create music from different genres. Take Minus The Bear, for example. This indie rock band has been around since 2001 and boasts “sophisticated time signature composition.”

Ray Brown: Canyon

Performing since 2010, singer-songwriter Ray Brown hails from Salem, New York. Canyon is the first release from the artist and it’s been described as a sandwich of fun and tragedy at the same time. Containing 12-tracks, Brown’s genre of choice is acoustic folk but he manages to extend and incorporate a little bit of alternative and country to the mix as well.

Propaganda: Excellent

A line from the song Change (off his outstanding spoken word/hip hop album with Odd Thomas titled Arm Ambidextrous goes: “But that's another subject, next album's called Excellent, already started writing, that's a Biblical work ethic." This gave us a look into the early working stages of what is now his aptly-titled album Excellent.

Dan Mayes: Lemonade & Cigarettes

Dan Mayes is an Aussie singer/songwriter that has a great way with indie folk pop songs. Lemonade & Cigarettes is the artists' latest offering since his initial debut solo record, Press Random, back in 2006. This new album was released early this year (2012) and features 11 singles available at a name-your-price option at BandCamp. Combining his love for slower, folkish pop and indie rock music, the album echoes with beautiful melodies and charming pop sounds. It's hard to imagine Mayes as a bassist for a full-on rock band after listening to this.

Yael Meyer: Meet Yael Meyer

This week, listen to something new and Meet Yael Meyer, which is also the title of the LA-based songstress’ special edition EP released via Noisetrade. Fans of Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor may celebrate as this collection features five flavorful pop tunes that spin the word “fun” into a whole new sound.

Described as a fan of the "NBA and Shakespeare," Shea is a talented singer songwriter that's currently based in New England. He admits to being influenced by fellow musicians and talented songwriters, Rivers Cuomo and Elliot Smith among others.
