Valkaama

Valkaama is a story about fate. Two people who's lives are actually intertwined with each other, end up travelling together in search of a mythical community somewhere in the North of Finland. The title Valkaama is actually derived from two Finnish words, meaning "home" and "polar night." The movie is purely open sourced and licensed under creative commons. It has received countless praises both from online communities as well as local publications. The film is based on a novel by Hendrick Behnisch’s of the same title. Made and shot with no budget and relying heavily on the internet as a means of distribution, the film allows both amateur and professionals to create their own versions of the film with the help of its open source licenses.

No Guns for Jews

Although No Guns for Jews might seem like an Anti-Semitic, anti-gun control rights for Jews, it's actually quite the opposite. This 40 minute documentary tackles the importance and provides simple, but valid arguments for having a pro-gun Jewish society. The film was produced by JPFO and features pretty stark and controversial arguments on why gun disarmament among Jews can only lead to more chaos and death.

Three people wake up in a hotel room, not knowing who they are, how they got there and why. Point of Departure is an interesting film from German based independent film outfit, Retsina Films. The film follows the three main characters in trying to figure out where they are and who they are. The intrigue of how they lived their lives and why they ended up in an unknown place is part of the intrigue that surrounds the film.

Infest Wisely – sci-fi feature in seven episodes centered around nanotechnology

Nanotechnology gets out hand and becomes viral. Infest Wisely is a seven episode lo-fi science fiction independent film that revolves around the hazards of using nanotechnology. The film has seven different episodes coming from seven different directors although each episode was written by creator Jim Munroe. Each piece revolves in its own story, but are somehow all intertwined within the main plot of the movie. The movie is released under a creative commons license. According to Munroe, "It was free to make, so it's free to watch."

Mormor (Grandma) – short film about a surprising vacation at grandma’s

Mormor means “grandmother” in Norwegian. This short film is about a renewed bond that was formed between a granddaughter (Pia) and her mormor one fine summer. Pia’s parents are too busy with their lives to take care of her when the school’s on a break, so Pia takes a spontaneous vacation to her mormor’s home. Mormor is a widower, and so the young girl is such a delightful presence in her home. They have so much fun and so many adventures together. However, their adventures are cut short by those who do not get their idea of fun. Mormor is subsequently sent to the frightening “retirement” home, so Pia has to break in and enter the “prison” to save her mormor.

Heartbreak, broken homes and teenagers. Those three things are the main elements that you'll find in Oceania. The film is written and directed by Harry (Harpreet) Dehal and revolves around the lives of teenagers as they handle the breakup of their parent's marriage in a small California coastal town. Although the storyline is a bit jaded, the storytelling and cinematic style is intriguing at best. For a film done on less than a $4,000 "lifetime savings" for then 17 year old Dehal, it's a film that showcases what a whiz kid, a camera, a passion for storytelling and film can do.
