Utility

Scan Pages

Scan Pages, to put it simply, adds a scanning element to your iPhone. Developed by Ricoh Innovations Inc, the app allows you to scan product labels, signs, magazines, forms, documents and more. There are a few apps like it on iTunes, but this one stands out because of its sophisticated image processing technology. Scanning is a breeze. Use your phone’s camera to take a snapshot of the document. Move the yellow dots to adjust the borders. This yellow rectangle can be used to fix distorted photos. The app is best used with documents on a white background with black text.

Offline Gmail

Offline Gmail by Google gives you access to your mail even without an Internet connection. At first this seems unnecessary; aren’t we always online with desktop computers, laptops, smartphones and Wi-Fi hotspots? Actually, it is necessary. Web connections are plentiful in the US and many other countries. But what if you’re traveling to a place or country where Web access is choppy?

iHandy Level Free

iHandysoft is known for making a lot of useful apps for the iOS and Android, and iHandy Level Free is one of them. This nifty app turns your device into an alignment tool. This spirit level app has no fancy features, but it does the job right. IHandy Level can be used for a variety of household tasks like roof pitch calculations. It can also be used to measure walls, furniture, decors and take various angles. Students can rely on this to perform assorted measurements. Because iHandy Level uses the iPhone’s accelerometer, the results are spot-on. In fact the app can be used for measuring vehicle inclination.

UltraDefrag

UltraDefrag doesn’t have a flashy interface, but it is effective as far as free defraggers go. It was created by the UltraDefrag development team as an open source alternative to other commercial defragging utilities. The default interface is graphical, but there is a command line option. This utility is available in 32 and 64 bit versions, so choose the right one for your system. You can run it as Windows boots up. Or you can just set up a schedule so it runs on a specific time. UltraDefrag is very simple to use. Launch the program and choose the drive you want to defrag, analyze or optimize. The defrag option is self explanatory. The Analyze option displays a graphic sector table. It shows where on the hard disk your files are.

PeaZip

PeaZip is a powerful but easy to use open source archiving tool. There are many free compression utilities out there, but few are as robust as this one. In many ways, it is more powerful than some paid archive apps. The program is user friendly. Thanks to its drag and drop support, a user just has to drag a zip file on the interface and it will be decompressed. The archiving screen pops open when you drop a file there. All the basic functions are labeled clearly so new users will have no trouble using the program. File browse tools and function buttons make it a snap to add folders and files.

Awesome Screenshot

A screen capture usually does just one thing: capture part of (or the entire) screen. Awesome Screenshot is a free utility that takes it to another level. Aside from capturing screenshots, you will be able to share and annotate them. Awesome Screenshot isn’t that big, so downloading doesn’t take a lot of time. Learning how to use it is a no-brainer. If you want to share a webpage, just go to that page. Click the extension button and that’s it. The annotate toolbar provides several options for annotating pages. Options include adding lines, circles, boxes or drawing freehand. A useful feature allows you to blur information. Use this tool if you want to hide specific elements.

Snowmix

Snowmix has many functions, but it is essentially a computer software that allows you to mix recorded and live video feeds. The program was developed by Peter Maersk-Moller and the Copenhagen Suborbitals StreamTeam. The project came about because existing Linux video encoders didn’t have the features the developers wanted, namely to combine several video streams and graphics, text and video overlaying.

Feedly

There are a lot of useful Google Chrome extensions, and Feedly is one of them. It works like a news reader, informing you the latest news from blogs, feeds, Twitter, Facebook and other sites. The contents are displayed in a magazine-like manner. Feedly also integrates nicely with YouTube, Amazon, Delicious, Google Reader and other popular sites. Feedly provides many ways to edit, work, display, filter and add content. You’ll have to spend some time configuring the program, but it’s worth it. After setting up Feedly, you will end up with a custom made magazine digest consisting of stuff you want. The app also provides suggestions, a lot of which are pretty good and spot on.
