Cologne Commons 05: Compilation

Here's another cool compilation from Cologne Commons that you can sink your teeth into. Cologne Commons Compilation 05 is a mix of indie pop, electronic ambient sounds that carefully showcases some of the best netlabel acts Germany has to offer. This awesome festival is a great place where businesses, artists, musicians and netlabels gather to celebrate everything and anything creative commons represents.

MARCH: Démo juin 2010

Catchy indie pop rock with a streak of bitterness. Composed of Swiss natives, Xavier on vocals; Jerome and Seymour on guitars; Pierre-Yves on bass; and Vincent; March makes their debut with a demo that includes three upbeat indie pop rock tracks. Filled with bitter, moody lyrics along with a nice blend of acoustic electronic sound; this demo from March deserves 25 minutes or more of your time.

Letmein: The Bag

Punk rock from "non-punks." Although Letmein might not be true blue punks when they were growing up, they can sure create some powerful punk pop tunes without any problems. Letmein is a five piece band from Brescia, Italy. The group has a knack for creating punchy, poppy punk rock, even though they admit that they dislike listening to "radio friendly pop." Ironically, much of the tracks they have would feel right at home in any top 40 pop punk rock list.

Whalers

Fun indie pop rock that'll put a perfect cap to your summer. Chumming Around by Whalers is a feel good summer pop rock album that's definitely worth tripping to. Although the production quality is not that good, you can instantly tell just by listening to one track that these guys definitely have a gem up their sleeves. Hopefully, they'll take a cue and record a higher quality version and let us enjoy our last days of summer "chumming around."

Futile: 7 Nightmares

Alternative progressive four piece from Germany. With the influx of generic alternative rock bands, it's hard to find bands (famous or not) that conform to the norm yet still stand out. Futile is one of the few bands that can do this. Truth be told, they do sound like just another rock/alternative band on the horizon, but some of their songs are quite good and worth checking out. Think German, slightly unrefined version of Staind, with a little bit more progressive.

Cologne Commons Compilation 04

Cologne Commons Compilation 04 is a mix of some of the best pop, techno, electronic and dub tracks you'll find among Cologne's netlabel industry. It has become somewhat tradition during The Cologne Commons Festival to release accompanying records that help exhibit some of the best free and legal music in their part of town. The festival serves as an avenue to educate and promote free, legal music under creative commons license.

The New Economy: To Wake Up From a Dreamless Sleep

The New Economy is a three piece indie rock band from Germany that play music like they have been listening to a list of A-list indie Brit rockers all their life. They conjure up a mixture of danceable, catchy, and rockish tracks which is capped off with Brit sounding vocals. To Wake Up From a Dreamless Sleep is the trio's second full-length and most recent record. It comes with 9 easily likable tracks that are both dancy and even melodic in places.

Victori4: 21st Century Samurais

Swiss French rockers that don't sound European at all. Victori4 (can be read as Victoria or Victory Four) likes to describe their sound as cinematic indie rock. There's not much to disagree about that description since the band's songs definitely sound as if they belong in some indie rock film or TV show. It might be a stretch, but 21st Century Samurais have one of the best albums available for free in Jamendo. Their brand of indie alternative rock might not break boundaries but it is refreshing and awesome. Worth every penny if you buy the album on Itunes or Amazon too.

whynotme: The Rise of the Big Fat Bastard

Formed back in 2005, Whynotme is a five man band from Nordic country, Norway. The Rise of the Big Fat Bastard is the band's first full length album. It's a collection of 10 fast paced, stylish and very punk rock tracks that breathes a lot of energy. Although the band claims that it was recorded in "poor condition," it's actually not bad. Better yet, its filled with fun and catchy tracks that's hard to let go.
