Educational apps need to strike a balance between educating and entertaining, and BrainPOP Featured Movie by BrainPOP is one that does it well. There are two versions of the app, one with a free subscription and another that is fee-based. The free subscription does not have as many features, but it does offer enough for education purposes and can help you decide if it is worth paying for.
BrainPOP consists of short animated films – around 4 minutes each – along with quizzes on assorted subjects including current events, science, history and so on. When you launch the app you will see icons for Movie and Quiz, and you just have to tap the one you are interested in.
The Explorer Subscription gives you access to a free quiz and movie every day. At the bottom of the screen, you will also find links to the topics that are covered such as math, English, arts, and music, technology etc.
Tap Math for instance, and you will see buttons for free movie, numbers, and operations, data analysis, algebra and so on. However, only the free movie option is available in Explorer Subscription. Tap free movies in Math or whatever topic you like and you will see the available films there.
The films are short but informative, just right for kids who do not want to get stuck watching a long video. After watching the film you can take the related quiz by tapping the button. Ideal for teachers and students alike, BrainPOP is as fun as it is educational.
