Dawn of Steel from publisher Flare Games is a mobile strategy mech-based game, and the basic elements are familiar to gamers: construct a base, raise your army, attack the enemy to get resources and strengthen your base. However, this RTS game does bring some unique features to the table that make it a good game.
The most important departure Dawn of Steel makes is that you control all your mechs. You deploy three of these in each battle, and since you’ve got complete control, there is no need to get frustrated with sloppy AI that gets your units wiped out. While you don’t get to handle a lot of mechs on the field, it’s better than a mindless battalion that gets slaughtered.
All the mechs can be equipped with a variety of weapons, and you can upgrade their equipment as well. Be careful of the gear you choose since that has a direct effect on the mech’s performance. Your mechs have powerful lasers and rockets, but you cannot just shoot carelessly since the units tend to overheat, and this is where strategy comes into play.
While you’ve got control over the units, Dawn of Steel doesn’t fall into the trap of micro management. You have to manage some things, but the fact that you only have to handle three at a time makes the game more enjoyable and less of a hassle. Just like other mobile games, this has a timer so if your mech gets damaged, wait for it to be repaired. But there’s no energy system in place so you can keep playing this as long as you want.
