Autodesk Sketchbook Free Edition was developed expressly for mobile, and while the company is best known for their 3D software this 2D drawing app is well designed. There’s a single in-app purchase option to access some features, but the free edition should be sufficient for casual doodling and sketching.
Sketchbook was made for casual and professional users, but if it’s you’re first time to use, it’s easy enough to figure out. If some elements in the display looks or feels similar to the desktop version, that’s because it uses the same paint engine. The tools are arranged clearly with options for selection, text, transform, fill etc. all just a tap away.
The pencils and other tools draw and paint smoothly, ideal for detailed illustrations, and you have the option of working in full screen mode for a more detailed look. The interface is clear enough, but if you want additional workspace you can use your mobile device’s entire screen.
The default brush sets should suit most users, but there are options for customization, and if you want to change the opacity, radius, brush properties etc., you can do so. If you’re drawing something in detail, you can zoom in as far as 2500%, and with markers, brushes and pencils and other presets, it’s easy to set your vision to work.
Once you have a number of artworks done, you can view them in the Sketchbook Gallery, and with several view and sort options, it’s a convenient to show off your skills. In other words, this is a nice little app.
