Shunning conventions, Gumbel, a self-taught artist, is an interdisciplinary musician that weaves together various sounds to create his own musical journey.
Pocket Carnivalé is the fifth release from the artist. It serves as a mini EP combining beautiful pockets of instruments and colorful little electronic sounds.
It is sampling of a little bit of hip hop, dance, acoustic and 8-bit makes the record even more exciting to listen to.
Musical magpies will enjoy this album immensely. Pocket Carnivalé is a hodgepodge of electronica, experimental pop and 8-bit sounds that glue together and create dreamlike sounds. The musical landscape Gumbel creates is immense, encompassing various samples and instruments.
Opening single, Welcome to the Pocket Carnival is probably the best example for the compilation. The track starts off with a fun arcade sound that would feel right at home in a Pacman game, before incorporating dance beats and a whole mix of ambient sounds.
Meanwhile Magical Popcorn Moog is a track that starts with a dreamy and haunting musical mix before keyboards and synthesizers invade to lift up the mood. On the other hand, AphexTobeinStein lays down a more trip hop dub feel; adding throbbing beats and a cool rave sound.
Even though it’s difficult to categorize musically, Pocket Carnivalé carries a nice charm. The album firmly plants itself in the crossroads of various other genres and serves as great entertainment while there. It’s complex yet utterly simply at the same time. Take a listen.
