The sea serves as an inspiration to so many wonderful things, including Fanfarlo‘s recent EP.
This London-based indie alternative band released The Sea last October 2013, and the quintet describes it as “science fiction” concept project, where the songs are said to be a discussion about the possible origins of humanity and the direction we are all heading for in the future. Moreover, the group describes it as “Space Opera” meets “Spaghetti Western.” [Hmm, interesting.]
The upbeat “A Distance” stars the whole affair, and despite its quantity-evoking title, the track is classic Fanfarlo fun and can easily fit in on the ‘indiest’ of indie soundtracks out there. The title track, “The Sea,” quickly follows, and it’s clear that we’ve entered sci-fi territory; the spacey and trippy arrangement feels like a slow journey underwater aboard a submarine.
As for the last song, “Witchi Tai To,” it’s simply alien to our ears (or was that Hawaiian?), and it’s okay, Simon Balthazar is the captain we’ve all been clamoring for.
Track listing:
