Spybot Search & Destroy is the free version of the anti spyware program from Safer Networking Ltd. Once installed, the program will look for signs of malicious code, adware and other threats to your computer. This program will also check the Windows Registry, clean it up and also remove unnecessary files in your computer.
Spybot will also clear security tracks and it is updated automatically so it can scan and remove the latest spyware. Installation is pretty easy and the program lets you choose what languages and skins to include in the installation. Even better is the fact that the application will ask you to let it back up the Registry (which you should allow). There is a help file and a comprehensive manual where all the major functions are covered.
There are three main functions here: Updates, Recovery, and Check for Problems, all of which are pretty self explanatory. Spybot will also scan your computer for any spyware, but the time it takes to complete a scan will depend on the size of your system.
However, even if it does take a while, the program is very comprehensive and can find even those spyware that are hidden in your system. The thing with some spyware programs is they lurk in your system for a while and don’t seem to do anything but they actually consume a lot of resources or steal data, so it pays to use this kind of program.
There is also a paid version of Spybot Search & Destroy that offers antivirus protection aside from spyware protection. But if you already have a separate antivirus program, then this free version will be sufficient.
