Acoustic alternative indie folk that takes you far, far away into the California coast. Strange Birds is Aidin Sadeghi and Bret Leinen. Together, they create a soft acoustic and alternative sound that echoes the “wonders of the California coast.” Think The Shins coupled with Chris Martin style vocals.
This self-titled EP is composed of 7 lovely tracks that, in fact, do reflect a soft California flair. For the band, the main goal was to “create music as true and familiar as the places we have passed through and the experiences we have shared over the past year.” Coming from the beautiful city of Irvine, indie acoustic pop duo Strange Birds do make strange but pleasant music indeed. Like most bands, the talented duo started out doing underground recordings of their personal musings. Finally overcoming their penchant for closet recordings, the group finally released their Strange Birds EP in hopes of creating a lasting musical relationship with the public.
Strange Birds opens up with “Summerbirds,” a breezy and relaxing track accompanied with soft drumming and acoustic guitars. Yes, they do conjure up a nice afternoon by the ocean, but for some reason it makes me think of the Hawaiian coast instead of the California coast that it is supposed to represent. On the other hand, “Bandages”, is a slightly haunting track that makes me think of Chris Martin and his crew. Although it’s not completely the same, it does sound a lot like a track that Coldplay wrote. All that’s lacking would be the distinctive vocals that makes Coldplay one of the best bands around.
Strange Birds might not be as big as their soundalikes, but they do have their own twist. The relaxing tracks, acoustic strumming and melancholic/reflective feel of the tracks make the entire EP worth listening to.
